During an approximate span of 4 years in the early 1930's, before the term serial killer was created, residents of Cleveland, Ohio were terrorized by a series of gruesome murders. Because many of the estimated 12-20 killings occurred in the impoverished Kingsbury Run district of Cleveland, the press dubbed the killer "the mad butcher of Kingsbury run". The murderer was also known as the "Cleveland torso murderer" and the unprecedented killings were often referred to as a real-life version of "Murders on the Rue Morgue." After his famous career as head of Chicago's legendary crime busting "untouchables", Elliot Ness needed a new career. he returned to his hometown of Cleveland, and as public safety director, the Kingsbury Run murders fell under his jurisdiction. In this class, we will learn about this dark period in Cleveland's history and of Ness's unsuccessful struggle to find the killer.
