Fueled by hysteria brought on by belief that witches were among them, some inhabitants of Salem Village in Massachusetts Colony, instituted a reign of terror lasting from early 1692 to mid-1693 resulting in at least 20 deaths, torture, and over 200 arrests and imprisonments. In this class we will examine historical accounts of the witch hunts and persecutions of those accused of witchcraft in Salem. You may be surprised to learn that contrary to legends and Hollywood, no "witches" were burned alive, and a four-year-old girl was accused of witchcraft and imprisoned.
